This month, we welcomed new children into our classroom. It was a new and exciting
beginning for everyone. On the first day, some children were a little unsure and needed extra hugs, comfort, and support as they adjusted to the new classroom and missed their families. Educators stayed close, talked gently with them, and helped them feel safe, cared for, and welcomed.
As the week continued, the children slowly became more comfortable with the
classroom, educators, and their new friends. They began exploring different areas and joining activities. The children enjoyed playing in the kitchen, taking care of the babies, making pretend food, reading books, and playing with one another. They watched what their friends were doing and often joined their play. These moments helped the children get to know each other and begin building friendships.
Music was another enjoyable part of our week. The children sat in a group and sang
familiar songs, learned new songs, moved their bodies to the music, and took turns
choosing songs from the bucket. Bella shared that she knew “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little
Star” and everyone enjoyed singing together. These experiences gave the children a
chance to express themselves and feel connected to the group.
Outdoor play gave the children many opportunities to explore and try new things. They enjoyed riding bikes, playing in the sandbox, exploring the playground, and playing with musical instruments. The children also watched and learned from each other. Hazel practiced walking on the logs while holding Jaspreet’s hand. After watching Hazel, Krisha decided to try it herself and proudly said, “Look! I can go by myself!” She showed excitement and confidence when she reached the other side.
Throughout the week, the children developed important social and emotional skills. They practiced sharing, taking turns, helping friends, and playing together. For example, Bella and Polly worked together to make a pretend strawberry milkshake in the sandbox and shared the materials. The children also listened to each other and shared their ideas during play and music activities. These experiences helped them learn how to cooperate, communicate, and develop friendships.
By the end of the week, we could see the children becoming more comfortable, happy, and confident in their new classroom. They were more willing to join activities, talk with educators, and play with their friends. Krisha’s experience on the logs showed how children can learn by watching and encouraging each other.
It was a wonderful first week of welcoming new friends, building trust, developing
relationships, and learning together through play. We look forward to seeing the children continue to grow, explore, and build new friendships in the weeks ahead.
